Our History
Milborne Port Village Hall stands alongside the five-acre Memorial Playing Field, which opened in June 1955. The first building on the site was the former cricket pavilion, carefully carried by hand from the old cricket field. Remarkably, it is still in use today. Over the years, the site has grown to include tennis courts and a children’s play area, creating an important recreational space for the village.
The current Village Hall was built through a community project in 1982. Its success was recognised when the project won a BBC-sponsored competition, bringing the Radio 1 Roadshow to Milborne Port, hosted by Paul Burnett and attended by well-known DJs and celebrities.
In June 1993, the hall welcomed BBC Radio 4’s Any Questions?, featuring Ted Heath, Roy Hattersley and Jonathan Porritt, with Jonathan Dimbleby in the chair.
As local performances and community events continued to thrive, the hall developed to meet growing demand. In particular, the popularity of Milborne Port Opera and its Gilbert and Sullivan productions led to the addition of the stage and Camelot Room in 2001.
Today, Milborne Port Village Hall remains a valued and well-used community space, welcoming local groups, private hirers and visitors alike. The Management Committee is committed to protecting its future and ensuring the facilities continue to meet the needs of a modern, active village community.
